Christopher Columbus called it Juana, but Cuba was originally called "Cubanascnan". Spanish soldier Diego Velazquez colonized the island, establishing Baracoa in the 1511. After that he established Santiago de Cuba in 1514 and Havana in 1515. The independence came in 1830 and the slavery was abolished in 1886.
Cuba is nowadays a renowned travel destination with 6700 species of plants, 14,000 species of invertebrates and 650 species of vertebrates.
