Christopher Columbus called it Juana, but Cuba was originally called "Cubanascnan" by the natives. Spanish soldier Diego Velazquez colonized the island, establishing the town of Baracoa in 1511. After that he established also Santiago de Cuba in 1514 and Havana in 1515. The independence came in 1830 and the slavery was abolished in 1886.
This island has four mountain ranges, Turquino (1,974 meters) being the country's highest peak, still it has a warm climate all year round, with the average temperature around 25,5 Celsius degrees and the average relative humidity of 78%.
